It's those priceless moments

"Mummy I love you" said Renée to me this morning as I was brushing her hair in time for school.
"I love you too darling", I replied.
"No, but Mummy, I really, really love you."
"And I really, really, really love you."

This had the potential to go on for some time. It reminded me of the book that my Mother had bought for me when I had first given birth to Renée and one that I hadn't read in a long time - the one with the two hares - 'Guess How Much I love You' - where Mummy Hare concludes by saying 'I love you right up to the moon and back'.

I wanted to say something similar to Renée, but she beat me to it.

"You're the best Mummy in the world and if they had Mummys on other planets then you'd be better than them as well."

It was a priceless moment which brought tears to my eyes and made me realise just how lucky I am.

  4. Girls are the sweetest, my girl used to tell me, "Mum I love you as big as the universe," every day. Now she still goes, "Kiss me," me everynight and she is 13 already.

  6. Wow - what an imagination Renee has! I can't think of a better and more creative way to describe to someone how much you love them. Bless her cotton socks.

  7. I love those sort of moments... and how brilliant that we can blog about them, and then they are for ever out in blogland! Lovely post.

  8. My little boy always say "I love you so much mummy", isn't it funny how those words have the power to stop your heart...here's hoping our children always find it so easy to say them...and mean them!!!

  10. I asked my son the other day "You know I love you, right?" (I tell him all the time.) He said "Mama, I knew that even the moment I was made, nine months before I was born." There's no better feeling.

  13. allgrownup - Silly me - I hadn't even thought it might be because she was a girl - I just thought it was because I was such a wonderful Mother!! You've burst my bubble!!! ;-))

Maddie - Aaaah - that is too cute. It's such a wonderful feeling when they tell you that they love you - I suppose it always will be. Here's to more children!! (But not from me)!!

leslieanne - Aah - thank you!! Wow - I don't know about alien mummies - I never asked her that!!!

kestrel - Yes - girls really are gorgeous (luckily I have two of them)! And I get double kisses and cuddle severy day ;-))

Modern Mom - Yes - I love having little conversations like that - I could spend all day having them. BTW - I still can't get in to your blog and it's driving me mad. I may even cry about it!

Mamma Po - I know - there I was trying to think of something funny and creative and instead she came up with somethig far better than I ever could have done - and she's only 4!!! She totally put me to shame...

  14. Ahhh. That's so lovely. I had an amazing 'Mummeeeeeeeee, I loooooove you' from my three and half yr old a few weeks ago. I chose to ignore the fact that I was just about to buy him an ice cream at the time!

  15. LWM - I now - imagine all these little things happening that I'd forget if I didn't blog about them. Not only is it fun for me (and... cough...everyone else), but it wil also be lovely for the girls to have when they grow up. Big up blogging!

Lorraine - I know - it's amazing how much those little words can mean. I read a book once about a little girl trying to wake up her daddy from his bed. She tried all sorts of things - like telling him there was a monster in the room, or jumping on top of him, or telling him the house was on fire. None of them worked, until she said 'I love you Daddy' - and then he woke straight up and gave her a cuddle. It's so true...

Amy - Hee hee - I get poo face a lot too. It always makes me laugh. Although I got 'I hate you Mummy' once and it broke my heart. I'll have to get used to it though - I may get a few more of those when she's a teenager!

Mwa - Aaah - that is gorgeous (and yes - I think you loved him especially at that moment)!! Hee hee. Yes, it is such a wonderful feeling when they tell you that they love you - and also knowing that they know... it must be nice for them too.

Sandy - Aaah - yes hearing your little ones speaking for the first time is just adorable - I was always desperate for my little ones to speak because I just wanted to know what was going on inside their heads - it's a total revelation!

Reasons - Oh darling - I'm so sorry - I didn't mean to burst your bubble!! You are the best...you are (just the best after me, that's all)!!

  16. So sweet i savour those "i love you mummy" moments, which are to be fair quite frequent, as i know within the next few hours i will hear the shrills of "I hate you, your the meaniest mummy ever" - oh the joys x

  17. Hot Cross Mum - Think I must have crossed you in the ether - aaah - I love that really loud, really longgg 'I love you Mummy' - and yes - I do notice an increase the nearer we get to food time too!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. WoB - keep crossing people doing other comments - I must be quick and not dither...not so easy for me!! Yes, I have had an 'I hate you' once before and it was truly horrible (I think I may even have cried) although, like you say, I should toughen up as they'll be more once they hit the teenage years!!

  19. Flea likes to say "Mummy, you can't say you love me ALL THE TIME" with a long-suffering shrug.

I think my favourite thing she ever said to me was when we were swimming and I dared to hold on the back of her suit: "Back off Mummy, my can do it myself, actually."

  20. Very sweet. See now you can look back through your blog in years to come and remember this.

  21. How wonderful!

  22. Sally - I know - Renée gets like that sometimes too - she often says 'Yes Mummy - I know you love me - you tell me ALL the time'!!! Whoops - sorry for being so boring! Ha ha - totally love Flea's comment at swimming - sounds just like Edie - she's driving me mad trying to be so independent and has to do absolutely everything herself!

Lady Mama - I know - that's the fantastci thing about blogging - I don't need to remember anything - cos it's all right here.

GG - I know - still gets me teary thinking about it now! x

  24. I tried 4 times last night to leave a comment on here, and thought I had finally done it but it doesn't seem to have been added. Hmmm....

Just wanted to say enjoy it while it lasts, my 12 year old just tells me I'm poo now.

  26. dd - I know, I know. I have been warned. When does it start petering out? I do have girls though...so it might last a bit longer than with boys?? Oh I do hope so...

Night Owl - Hello and thanks for stopping by... and thanks for the comment - yes, it was very sweet indeed.

notSupermum - Oh honey - I kiss you for persevering!! Thanks so much. I blame blogger - I have no idea what the problem is, but loads of people have trouble leaving comments. Hmph. But yes, I will enjoy it - although I'm poo too most of the time and I've even had an 'I hate you', but we're not speaking about that...!

Marion - Hello darling - we miss you too!!! But you're coming back soon. We can't wait to have you xxxxxxxxx

  28. Too sweet! Rosemary has been extra generous with the Mummy love since our return off holiday. When we were having dinner before Grandma and Grandpa went home, she was sat next to me and every 10 seconds she launched herself into my arms shouting 'Awww. I love you so much, Mummy.' It was very sweet, though after everyone else had finished eating and I still had almost a full plate, it did start to wear a little thin.

  29. Enjoy it now MT. When they get bigger, 'I love you' is usually followed by 'Can I have....?'

I think my lot get it from their father!

    Ho Hum!

  30. Iota - I know! I'm not quite sure what I did to deserve it, but I'm not even going to ask...

Tasha - Aaah - she's so cute Rosemary - I saw all the photos. There's just nothing better than being told by a child that they love you - even if it is over and over again!

Dancinfairy - Yep, I think it was. Can't think of anything I'd like to have said to me more...

RM - Hello my dear! Yep, I can always count on you for a bit of grounding!! I know - I know - it won't last forever. And even at 4 and 2, my little ones know just how to get what they want...

  35. Take it from someone who hasn't heard "I love you" from her boy since about the age of six, that, my dear, is priceless. *wiping tear from eye* You're a lucky Mum.

  36. CJ - Thanks!! Yes, they really do. It used to be animals with me. Now it's children. I'm just a teary mess. There's no hope for me at all!!

clarey - Aaaww - thanks! Children do that to us don't they?? I'm just the messenger...! xx

Smitten - Aaawww....boys!!! I'm grateful for my girls - I think I'd be so sad if I didn't hear 'I love you' after 6. But then boys can help you move furniture late in life (trying hard to think of a positive)!!! xxxx

  37. I love that. We got that book when E was born and it i just the sweetest. Miss M has taken to telling me I am the best Mummy ever and clever and funny etc. I love it. She also tells me all my faults, wobbly bits etc, but I suppose the two go hand in hand. :D

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jo - Aaah - yeah I love it too - and yes, both of mine are pretty quick to point out my faults too. They give with one hand and take with the other!!
