It's the small things...

So I'm sitting here tapping away at the computer, annoyed, frustrated and generally extremely pissed off because the car has chosen to break down on the one morning that I really need it.

And then Edie runs in, shouting,

'Mummy, Mummy. Look at me. Look what I can do. Mummy look.'

I glance up, struggling to muster a smile, all thoughts elsewhere, but I manage it, for Edie's sake.

Judging by the tone of her voice and the excitement with which she's demanding my attention, it will be something new and wondrous.

Instead she lies on her back and kicks her legs in the air like an upside down tortoise.

'That's fantastic Edie', I say, not wanting to burst her bubble.

She stands up and leaves the room with pride etched all over her face.

And now I'm smiling.

I tell you, when you're a parent, it's the small things that make you feel all glowy.

  1. That's so sweet, and you're right - it IS the small things that make it all worthwhile. x

  2. That's so true... Sorry to hear about the car, I hope it gets sorted soon x

  3. Sounds like you should convert the car to wave-your-feet-in-the-air power!

  4. I have to agree with you there. It's always the little things that bring a smile.

  5. oh it's totally the small things that make it so wonderful

  6. Children are great at reminding you to lighten up, although a broken car is very annoying. Hope you get it sorted soon.

  7. Aw bless, how delicious! Well done you for giving her the attention she needed. Sometimes it's so hard to tear ourselves away from our own pressing and often equally demanding tasks. Funnily enough I decided just last night that I would try not to be on the computer when the children wanted to play. I thought they deserved more than just seeing the back of me. Especially now that I see less of them with the advent of school...

  8. And, 'specially for you, Mamma Po is back! xx

  9. You didn't throw in an 'excellent dear, but how are you with car mechanics?'

You're right to smile at the good stuff, hope the wheels are better now BTW.

  10. notSupermum - Yep and I was grateful that she did her little thing...moved me out of the doldrums for a moment there!

PHM - Thanks honey - car is in garage... managed to break down right in the middle of rush-hour/drop off school time at the busiest crossroads. Was hideously embarrassing with everyone beeping me...Fingers crossed it gets sorted.

Surprised - Now that is one good idea lady! Car might run a bit better then...

Brighton Mum - Yep, it was such a silly little thing, but the fact that she was so proud of it made me smile even more...

  11. Children. Just as you think they will send you loop-the-loop, they do something that warms your soul.... I go to bed tonight, with the vision of my 8yr old hopping & skipping across the road to school, all arms & legs (looking as camp as a row of silk tents) & it makes up for the lego I had to fish out of the hoover - again. Hope the car is sorted soon - my huuuge girlie weak point (& is your hubby away?)

    Love Lydia

  12. OP - Yep, it's funny how something so small can make you smile so much...

whistlejacket - Yep, she came in at just the right moment - and did something so small and silly, but it totally cheered me up. Car not good, buy hey, shit happens!

Mamma Po - Yay - I'm glad she's back...feel kind of close to her! Yep, sometimes I feel that the way to having great and wonderful children is, once in a while, to make them feel that you're really listening to them. It works wonders!

SPD - Oh don't speak to me about the car. Does the crank shaft mean anything to you?? It doesn't to me...but I did put the bonnet up and everything. Tried to pretend liek I knew what I was doing...even if I was in everyone's way and it was pissing down with rain. Not a good morning. But at least Edie made me smile. Could have been worse!

  13. Lydia - Just missed you whilst replying. And guess what? No hubby is not away. Unbelievable I know. He came back yesterday, but happened to be at home when I broke down, so couldn't do anything. So typical. Car currently at garage. Fingers crossed it will be ok in the morning. And yes, I think the lego in the hoover/other annoying things can always be excused when they do something cute. Unconditional love I think they call it!!!

  14. Cute! Usually it's when I'm at my most frazzled and just about to chuck him out the window that Kai pulls an extraordinarily adorable trick out the bag. Today - crawling round with my jumper over his head and laughing hysterically.

Hurray for the small things - I swear, most days it's the only thing that keeps me going x

  15. Josie - Missed you too. Keep missing people as I'm writing! Yep, thank God for the small things. Think I might have already gone insane without them. BTW, had a hideous night's sleep last night and thought of you!!! Felt like death warmed up all day... Can't imagine how you feel most days. Here's hoping it all gets better xx

  16. So true. Sometimes all it takes is for my son to put his head on my shoulder to break my bad mood.

  17. Absolutely. I love it when they're so proud after letting out a big fart as well.

  18. How sweet x Thank you for the link to the carnival, its actually 42 now as I had a lst min entry!!! x

  19. Lady Mama - I agree. Children can drive you half-crazy at times, but they can bring you back from the brink of insanity in the same breath. My emotions will never recover!

Mwa - Hee hee. Oh yes - we have lots of that in this house (does that surprise you?) We love a bit of toilet humour here...

New Mummy - No problem honey - and I shall change it to 42! Wow. What a lot of posts. x

  21. How lovely. I was feeling frazzled today, trying to cook and referee my two little boys so I put CBeebies on (as you do). Out of the blue Presley joined in with Scriblet and said 1 2 3 4 5. It's definitely the little things that make it all worthwhile x

  22. I love those little moments too. It is what makes this motherhood mularky worthwhile!

    ReplyDelete
  23. How cool, I can do it, too. Am gonna show you next time we meet. Note to self: must wear pants, must wear pants!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Right. I just laid on my back and kicked my legs in the air. It's actually very tiring and surprisingly hard work. Can't believe no-one is genuinely impressed by this....

    ReplyDelete
  25. Reasons - Hello honey - yes she is totally cute...really she is. Except today when she was a complete pain in the bum!

Sandy - Aaah - I know - sometimes (if I ever get a moment) - I just liek to watch them from afar...they really do do the cutest things when you're not watching.

BiB - Totally. I think that's why they happen - otherwise we'd all have gone completely insane by their first birthdays (at the latest)!!

AMM - Yep, it was. And she is too!

Met Mum - Hee hee. So talented, yet sooooo naughty!!

Dawn - Oh now that made me laugh...right - must try it myself. Hold on a sec...

Ok, am back. Yep, so right, it's not easy at all. Ok, I'm impressed. Well done you!! And well done Edie too. Will kiss her in the morning... xxx

  26. ah, simple things. snaffles usually saves his displays of talents ready for when i am about to tell him off. How can i tell him off when he makes me smile so much.

there is a meme award waiting for you when you get time http://snafflesmummy.blogspot.com/2009/09/meme-award-i-am-on-roll.html

  27. Spot on. It's the small things that are often
the most special. The trouble is they're also the easiest things to forget! I'm currently workng on a web project to make it easier for mums and dads to 'capture' the little moments that make parenthood so special. We're trying to do it while holding down proper jobs, but we've a holding page live at www.memorypools.com (if anyone's interested!)

  28. Snaffles - Oh they always do that don't they?? And yes, sometimes you want to tell them off but you're laughing too much - not great for the discipline! Thanks for the award honey - have given you one straight back. Have never been that quick about it!

Memoriesdad - Hello - and thanks for popping by. Will scoot right on over to yours. Sounds like a great idea!

  29. i love reading little posts like this, they make me all gooey about becoming a mummy!

  30. Mrs OMG - Yep - just you wait - you'll be truly amazed by all the tiny things that just make you want to sit back and gaze with adoration!! Not long now...x

  31. Oh that's so lovely and so true. And yay, your kid can do upside down tortoise, and let's face it, that means she can do upside down beetle, woodlouse and crab as well. Fantastic additions to the repertoire I think. :D

    ReplyDelete
  32. They help you to realise what's important don't they? A broken car is very annoying, but in the grand scheme of things a minor problem. Watching your child do something she's proud of, well that's worth something.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jo - Oh yep - upside down woodlouse is her speciality!! How did you know?

Victoria - You're so right - and I still can't get over how proud she was of it. Very, very sweet...
